Simon’s story

So here goes…

In October 2021, I heard the words no one ever wants to hear…

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The plan was to have surgery in December to remove my prostate, but COVID had other ideas, and my operation was delayed until February 2022.

That delay changed everything. By the time I finally had surgery, the cancer had spread to the prostate bed, meaning I now faced 45 rounds of radiotherapy. After months of treatment, I had an agonizing six-month wait to find out if it had worked. BUT

I held on to hope, but when the results came back, they weren’t what I wanted to hear. Cancer cells were still there. So, I braced myself for another 40 rounds of treatment, determined to fight on.

Then, in December 2024, three years after my diagnosis—I finally got the news I had been waiting for: I WAS CANCER FREE. I’ll have regular check-ups for the foreseeable future, but for now, there is a huge wait off of my shoulders.

Throughout this journey, I was under the care of Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

I can honestly say I have never been more inspired or grateful. Over the course of 85 hospital visits, not once did I feel like just another patient. The doctors, nurses, and staff weren’t just doing their jobs, they truly cared. Their kindness, compassion, and dedication carried me through some of the hardest days of my life, and I will forever be grateful.

Within the hospital grounds, I also came across an incredible small charity—the Linda Jackson Centre. Run by selfless volunteers, they guide patients through radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and the challenges that come after treatment. Their support makes a huge difference for many patients and definitely for me!

Now, I want to give back. My goal is to raise money through a sponsored Charity day for all! This will take place on the 5th of July at The Plough Tyttenhanger, both for Mount Vernon and the Linda Jackson Centre—two organisations that gave me so much when I needed it most.

To every single person who cared for me, supported me, and stood by my side—thank you. I will never forget what you’ve done for me.

I know the ask is big and times are tough, but any donations, big or small, you would truly be supporting me and all of these amazing organisations to support others in their cancer journey!
